Eyelash Extensions: Guide to Priming Lashes
Priming Lashes
Eyelash primer is something not all eyelash technicians use. You are probably thinking should I bother using primer then? Is it just another unnecessary step? When applying makeup many of use tend to use a primer before applying any other products. Many find that this helps their makeup apply smoother and helps it to stay on for longer. Most nail technicians also use a primer before applying acrylic or gel nails to help application and to prolong the wear time. Well, the same goes for lashes! The truth is you don’t have to apply an eyelash primer before applying the extensions, however it does have a handful of benefits and is definitely worth trying if you have not used one before. We have put together everything you need to know about eyelash primers from what they are to the benefits using it has. Keep reading to find out more…
First Things First, What is Lash Primer?
An eyelash primer is applied to your client’s real eyelashes before beginning the application of the eyelash extensions. The eyelash primer is specially formulated to work with the eyelash extensions application meaning it provided the maximum PH level. This maximum PH level works wonders with the bond between your client’s natural eyelashes and the extensions. It is very important to have a strong bond as this will enable your client’s extensions to last as long as possible which also lowers the levels of premature fall out. Always remember you should only every use eyelash primer on your client’s real eyelashes and never on any eyelash extensions!
So, How Does Lash Primer Work?
The primer contains the maximum PH level which helps to create a strong bond between the client’s natural eyelashes and the eyelash extensions. The primer works by opening up the cuticle layer in the eyelash which will cause the clients eyelashes to have a rougher texture. Since the client’s eyelashes have the rough texture, the eyelash adhesive is able to get a better grip of the eyelashes which therefore creates a stronger bond. Remember, a strong bond will have your client’s eyelashes lasting as long as possible between infills!
Some Clients Need Lash Primer More Than Others!
It is definitely a good idea to use eyelash primer on all of your clients. However, if you don’t wish to use it on all your clients there is one client you should defiantly use it on. Clients who have naturally oily hair and skin find their eyelashes don’t last as long as others. This is because the oil produced weakens the bond between their real eyelashes and the extensions. As we all know, oils are eyelash extensions worst enemy and should be avoided where possible. Apply an eyelash primer to these clients will help their lashes last longer and may notice they have less premature fall out than they would if a primer wasn’t used.
However, on the other side there is the clients who have naturally dry skin and hair. These are the client’s that don’t need a primer so much. You can still apply a primer to their lashes to strengthen the bond but it is not a step you have to do.
Step by Step Guide: How to use Lash Primer
- Eyelash primer should only be applied before the eyelash extensions. It should also only ever be used on your client’s real eyelashes!
- Apply a small amount of primer to your card or jade stone you don’t need much so make sure you are not heavy handed with this.
- Grab two micro applicator and pick up a small amount of the primer with one, the other one should be dry. Apply the primer to your client’s natural eyelashes using a dragging motion. You can use the dry micro applicator to hold lashes apart if needed. Don’t worry if you have applied too much primer to the lashes, you can always use a tissue to dap off any excess!
- Last but not least, using a disposable mascara wand brush through your client’s eyelashes to ensure the product is distributed across the eyelashes.
The Conclusion: Is it Worth Using Eyelash Primer?
Yes. Not all your client’s are the same and therefore some lashes require a little more prepping than others and that’s totally normal! As a lash technician you should always want to create the perfect set of extensions for your client and adding some primer to some clients may really help! Those who have naturally dry hair, lashes and skin may not notice any difference when you have applied a primer and when you have not so it may just be that you are selective with which client’s you use primer on. Remember you can always try a primer out and if it isn’t for you that’s okay too!
