Eyelash Extensions: Choosing the Best Length & Curl
Choosing the Best Length & Curl
Eyelash extensions are all about enhancing your client’s eyes and is key to select the best length and curl to suit their eye shape and create their dream set of lashes! Sometimes your client will come in asking for a certain style of extensions and it is your job to consult with them and advise them on what works best for them. It is also important to always explain how the style of extensions will affect the level of maintenance needed. For example, a client who wants long full extensions such as a Russian / Volume set will need to take more care with their lashes and will need to come in for more frequent infills as opposed to a Classic or Hybrid set. Simply put, the more natural the set, the less maintenance and TLC need. Let’s discuss how to find the best length and curl for your client.
How to Determine the Best Length & Curl for your Client
If you have a new client or an existing client who want to change their lash style, we highly recommend booking them in for a consolation prior to their appointment. With a new client you should always check their natural eyelashes to see how healthy their lashes are. If they have damaged lashes, you will need to suggest light weight options for them and avoid extensions such as Russians and opt for a Classic set until their lashes gain their health back. This is because applying excess weight to their already damaged lashes will only cause further damage and may even cause their real lashes to prematurely fall out!
In order to find what length is best suited to your client you need to choose an extension length based on the length of their natural lashes.
Let’s talk thickness. A great way to gage how thick your client wants their extensions to be is by asking them how many coats of mascara they usually wear. If they only apply a small layer (2 coats or less) then you should opt for a thinner diameter. If your client wears more than 2 coats of mascara, then opt for a thicker diameter. However, you should also keep in mind the health of their natural lashes. If there lashes are damaged, you should opt for a thinner diameter as you want to avoid any excess weight that can be avoided. If your client has healthy lashes, there is no problem and you should select the diameter based on the look your client wants to achieve.
Eyelash Extension Curls
The curl you select for your client should be based on what curl is suitable for their eye shape. For example, if your client has hooded eyes stay away from curls such as the D-curl and opt for a straighter curl such as a B-curl or a C-curl. It should also be based on the look your client wants to achieve providing it is suitable for their eye shape.
B-curl: The most natural curl, works great with those who have more hooded eyes or want a more natural real look.
C-curl: The most commonly used and more popular curl due to the medium curl. Mixes well with B, CC and D curls.
CC-curl: The perfect middle ground between the most used C-curl and the popular dramatic D-curl.
D-curl: Dramatic and works great with Hybrid and Russian sets. However, should be avoided on those with hooded eyes as may cause discomfort.
L+ curl: Similar to the CC-curl but has a straight base. This is used on those who want curly lashes and is more suitable for those with hooded eyes rather than the D-curl.
