Top 9 Eyeshadow Tips & Tricks for Mature Eyes

As your eyes begin to age, it’s important to keep in mind you may want to switch your makeup routine up. There are certain products that work great with younger eyes and vice versa. For example, as you become older, powders may emphasise any wrinkles you have whilst when you are younger it will blur your skin. Since we are focusing on eyes, we have brought together the best tips and tricks to keep them eyes looking young.

First Things First, Don’t Overdo It!

It is true what they say – less is more, especially for maturing eyes. Wear whatever eye shadow shade you want but be sure not to overdo it. Many think if they keep applying more and more then they will cover up the fact their eyes are aging, however it actually does the complete opposite! Caking on makeup will only enhance the fact your eyes are maturing size the eyeshadow will exaggerate the fine lines or wrinkles. However, you can still wear whatever shade of eye shadow you want and that brings us onto our next tip…

Use Creams over Powders

Powders have the tendency to enhance fine lines or wrinkles whereas creams will fill in the fine lines and give you much smoother look! If you still want to wear powdered eye shadow then apply a cream eyeshadow or concealer to the lid, then apply the eyeshadow on top.

Creams also work amazing on the rest of your face! Why not switch to cream blushes, shadows, highlighters and foundation? You will notice your skin will instantly appear much more youthful.

Avoid Glitters or Shimmers & Switch to Matte Eye Shadows

Glitter and shimmer eyeshadows tend to enhance fine lines or wrinkles. We recommend you use a matte eyeshadow instead to keep those eyes looking more youthful. However, if you can’t resist a shimmer, apply mainly matte eyeshadow to your lid and top it off with a little bit of shimmer. It is also super important to make sure your eye shadow is blended so grab a blending brush and blend away!

Use an Eyeshadow Primer

If you want your eyeshadow to stay in place all day whether you have powder or cream eyeshadow on its important to prep the lids! There are plenty of primers to suit everyone’s needs from hydrating to matte formulas, it’s all about selecting the right one for you. Always apply the primer before you apply the eyeshadow, however if a primer is not for you, why not try popping on some concealer as a base for the eyeshadow?

Waterproof Eyeliner

Before applying any eyeliner, we recommend you apply a primer as this will help to prevent any smudging or rubbing off. Apply the waterproof eyeliner above and under the lash line to bring out those beautiful eyes of yours. The primer and waterproof liner together will last all day but be sure to remove it properly before bed since it won’t be budging anywhere!

Highlight With Concealer

Like we have mentioned earlier, creams are a lot more forgiving on maturing eyes. So instead of using a regular powdered highlighter select a cream based one or some concealer! Apply the concealer just under the brow bone to clean up your brows and pull everything into place. This will also lift up your brows so it’s a win-win situation!

Apply Concealer under Your Eyes

If your eyes are feeling tired or you struggle from bags or dark circles under your eyes, concealer is your BFF. Why not try a colour correcting concealer such as a yellow concealer to block out any discoloration? There is also many other shades such as green, yellow and purple that work a treat!

What colour corrector is best for me?

Green: Hides redness and blemishes

Purple: Eliminates yellow tones in cool skin

Pink: Balances blue tones on cools skin (perfect for hiding veins)

Orange: Balances out blue tones on warmer skin

Yellow: Hides dark or purple tones (such as dark circles under eyes)

Mascara

When it comes to mascara, the right formula for you combined with a good technique will make the world of a difference! We have everything you will ever need to know to become a pro at mascara…

Step One: Choose the Best Formula for You

There is no ‘best’ mascara, of course there are good and bad ones but it’s all about what works best for you and gives the best results. Before purchasing a mascara, decide whether you want waterproof or regular as well as the colour; ultra-black, black or brown, if you’re feeling adventurous why not try a coloured one. The colour you decide on depends on the look you’re going for, ultra-black is the most impactful and dramatic, whilst a brown will give you the benefits of mascara but will keep things looking more natural. You should also keep in mind and ask yourself the question of ‘what do I want from my mascara?’ If you are looking to lengthen your lashes then opt for a lengthening mascara. There are plenty of options such as volume, lengthening, long lasting, 24 hour etc. A top tip is to check the wand the mascara comes in, different wand types will give you different results; a thicker wand will give you more volume whilst a thinner wand will give you more length.

Step Two: Wipe Off the Excess Mascara before Applying

Be sure the wipe any excess mascara off the brush before applying. If you don’t do this then you run the risk of clumpy lashes. However, for some this is the look they are going for so stack up them layers!

Step Three: Apply Mascara to the Lash Root

When it comes to application you want to make the most out of the mascara. It’s always best to start working from the root and towards the end of your lashes. By applying mascara to the root, this gives the appearance of fuller, thicker lashes! Keep repeating this step until you are happy with the amount of volume you’ve achieved. You can also use this method on your bottom eyelashes.

Step Four: The “Out-Up-In” Method

This method makes sure your lashes don’t all clump together and ensures they are more spaced out like your own lashes are. To use the ‘out-up-in’ method start at the outer corner of you eye, apply the mascara at an angle. This will pull the eyelashes up and out helping them appearing much longer. Next, move to the centre of your eye and pull the lashes up and move onto the lashes in your inner corner and pull them in. If you feel you need to be more precise in the inner corner then why not use the tip of the mascara wand?

Step Five: Apply Mascara to Your Bottom Lashes

Use the same technique as you did on your upper lashes, but this time on your bottom lashes. We recommend you use a thinner mascara wand for this as it will help you be more precise and prevent you from getting on your under eye. If you find this hard to do without getting mascara everywhere apply some cello tape underneath your eye or hold a piece of card there. This will prevent mascara getting on your skin and will go on the cello tape or card instead.

Step Six: Finishing Touches

Now that you have applied the mascara properly, you may want to use an eyelash curler or pop on a pair of your favourite false eyelashes. We recommend the Luxury 3D Mink or Faux Mink (vegan) lashes.

False Eyelashes

Just because you have mature eyes does not mean you need to ditch the false eyelashes! We highly recommend the ‘Tease’ synthetic lashes since they are more natural and have a clear band. The clear band will help to make the false eyelashes look like your own eyelashes, but the best part is they are only £3.95 a pair!
