Pros & Cons of Eyelash Tinting

Enhancing Your Eyelashes

Who doesn’t want long, dark, gorgeous eyelashes? There are many services, products and options available to help us achieve luscious long lashes. Some examples are false eyelashes, lash extensions, perms, tints and lifts. All these are great options and produce different results so it is all about choosing a service or product that will transform your eyelashes and achieve the look you want. Eyelash extensions, lash tinting, perms and lifts should be carried out by a well-trained and qualified professional. This is the safest way as these products can cause problems, irritation and damaged eyelashes if not done correctly. These services also take between 40 minutes – three hours depending on what you are having done. On the other hand, mascara and false eyelashes can be applied in less than a few minutes so this should be taken into account before you commit to a method of transforming your eyelashes. Since this blog is about lash tinting you are probably here to find out all the pros and cons of the eyelash tinting so let’s just get into it!

What is Eyelash Tinting?

Eyelash tinting is a procedure you can get done at a salon, DIY kits are also available (however, this isn’t recommended if you have little to no experience with tinting previously). Before tinting your lashes, the eyelashes must be carefully cleaned and brushes though thoroughly. Your natural eyelashes are covered with a base product and coated with a 2 – 3 layers of lash colouring tint. It is usually applied similarly to mascara or with an applicator. Once the tinting is finished a serum is applied. After tinting you must make sure to keep your lashes healthy and hydrated as the tint is a dye and therefore dries out your eyelashes.

Advantages of Eyelash Tinting:

  • Speeds up your makeup routine
Because eyelash tinting lasts a few weeks if looked after very well, there is no need to apply any mascara to your lashes as they will already be dark. This cuts down the amount of time it takes to get ready in the morning (perfect for those who need them few extra minutes in bed). However, over time the lash tint does begin to fad so you may find that you may need to apply some mascara or falsies when you are due a top up.

  • ‘No – Makeup – Makeup’
Not everyone is into wearing makeup or maybe you only like to apply makeup for special occasions. This is a great option as you do not need to apply anything such as mascara or false eyelashes, the only thing you will need to do is head down to the salon for a top up each time. It will defiantly give you the ‘I woke up like this’ look we all love.

  • Varity of colours
If you go to an experienced eyelash technician there will be a variety of lash tinting options available from black to colourful. It may be that you have light blonde hair and just want your lashes to appear more visible but not to dark, in this case you could opt for a brown tint rather than a black. You could also get a variety of shades such as a mixture of ultra-black and black to bring drama to your eyes whilst still looking natural. If you are feeling creative or heading down to a festival, you could always opt for a purple or blue shade which looks amazing!

  • You can achieve bold yet natural eyelashes

This is dependent on how full, thick and long your real eyelashes are naturally. The fuller your lashes are the more dramatic they will look! If this is the look you want to achieve, we recommend opting for a dark black or ultra-black shade.

  • Great for those who need to avoid mascara
No everyone can just pop on some mascara and head out the door. Some people can’t wear mascara due to sensitive eyes or an allergy to an ingredient in the mascara. If this is the case you are still able to achieve darker lashes using eyelash tint without having go through the torture of irritable eyes or an allergic reaction that comes from the mascara.

Disadvantages:

  • Results depend on the length of your natural eyelashes
When it comes to eyelash tinting, all results will be different. It all depends on the length of your natural eyelashes. If you have short lashes for example, tinting them will not make them become or look longer than what they are. Basically, your lash tech can only work with the eyelashes you have. In order to give the appearance of longer eyelashes you will need to either get eyelash extensions or pop on a pair of false eyelashes. In addition, it also depends on how full or sparse your real eyelashes are. Lash tinting will not give you the appearance of a fuller set of eyelashes it will only change the colour. Think of it this way, if you was to get your hair dyed a different colour it would not suddenly appear thicker or longer.

  • Lash tinting doesn’t curl your eyelashes
Lash tinting will only tint your eyelashes a different colour i.e. make them darker. It will not make your lashes more curled or change its shape. Many people with naturally long lashes tend to find their eyelashes are rather straight and therefore lacks curl. By tinting the eyelashes, this only exaggerates the straightness of the lashes but does adds some colour.

  • Side effects & allergic reactions
There is a long list of side effects and reactions that occur with lash tinting. Before applying any kind of tint, dye or glue around you eye or face area you should always run a patch test. Many people are unaware of allergies as they may not have come across them yet and only find out during or after the process and by then it is too late. A common side effect is eye irritation, burning, watery eyes and swelling. These side effects can last through the application and continue for a number of days… so always do a patch test! It is also very important that you go to a trained and qualified lash technician as they are fully trained in what they are doing. There has been a few cases where lash tinting has gone wrong and damaged peoples eye sights due to the ingredients and reactions.

  • Damages natural eyelashes
Lash tinting can also damage your eyelashes and dry them out. This is because any kind of dye or tint on your lashes and hair will strip the natural moisture out cause them to become dry and brittle. The more your lashes are tinted, the dryer and more brittle they will become. However, there are plenty of lash serums available to buy which will reduce the dryness. It is important to keep your real eyelashes healthy as damaged lashes result in excessive eyelash loss and your lashes will begin to look sparse.

  • Not long lasting
Eyelash tinting is a temporary fix, once applied will last around 1 – 3 weeks depending on the products used and how it will has been applied. Each day the lashes loss their tint and become duller and duller until they are back to normal. In order to make sure your lash tint lasts the full amount of time, you will need to look after them well by avoiding certain products and enviroments. So if you already have dark lashes there is very little point considering the price of the procedure.

  • Best results come from naturally thick, long & full eyelashes
The best results come from those who already have long thick lashes. Those will have their lashes tinted with sparse eyelashes don’t always get great results, more often than not the result is emphasis on the lack of natural eyelashes.

  • Restrictions
In order to ensure you eyelash tint lasts, you will need to make changes to your skincare and makeup routine. There are certain restrictions that come with having tinted eyelashes so this should be taken into account prior to going ahead with the procedure. You must avoid all oil based products, this can be a struggle for some since many makeup and skincare products tend to be oil based. You will need to invest in new products to ensure your lash tint lasts. You will also have to avoid oily makeup removers and makeup products. You also will need to avoid contact with water, warm temperatures and sun near your eyelashes so is not recommended to get your lashes tinted for a hot holiday. If your lashes come into contact with these factors the pigment of the tint will be removed and will need to be applied again to achieve dark eyelashes.

  • Takes time to apply
It takes around an hour to get your lashes tinted and it needs to be reapplied every few weeks. Applying mascara or false eyelashes only takes 1-3 minutes at the most so you should take these factors into account when deciding which option to go for.

Conclusion: Should I get my eyelashes tinted?

It is really up to you and what results to achieve from. We recommend you weigh up the pros and cons and make your decision from there. However, we advise you don’t get your eyelashes tinted if you have had allergic reactions previously from dyes or tints or if you have very sensitive eyes. If lash tinting doesn’t seem like the option for you there are plenty of other options available such as eyelash extensions, false eyelashes, mascara and lash perms.
