Guide: How to Find & Choose an Eyelash Extension Technician
Eyelash Extensions & Finding the Right One
It is not always as easy as it sounds. When people find their favourite lash artist they want to keep hold of them and not let them go and therefore you may find many eyelash extension techs can be fully booked up back to back with appointments. However, this does not mean you won’t be able to find any other amazing lash artists! In this blog we will be discussing all the things you should look for in an eyelash technician and how to pick the right one for you.
First things first, check they are a licensed or certified eyelash technician.
This is extremely important, the last thing you want is to be getting extensions applied by a non-licensed or certified artist. A licensed or certified lash technician is one that has completed full training on application as well as health and safety, they are also are insured by an accredited body. Heading to someone who isn’t trained could result in serious problems as a result of poor application, low hygiene and even using products such as glue that includes damaging and toxic chemicals in the lash adhesive. Your eyes are highly sensitive therefore can easily become irritated and react to products used or the poor application and if anything was to happen there would be no issuance to turn to.
Sanitation is extremely important and all good eyelash technicians take this seriously and sanitise their tools and work station in-between clients. However, those who are not fully trained may not understand the importance of this and sanitise not as regularly. This is a huge issue as it can lead to eye infections and is pretty gross.
It is also important that lash technicians understand the importance of your lash health. They should understand how many extensions they can apply to a single eyelash in order not to apply extensions that are not too heavy on your real eyelashes. Add to much weight to a single eyelash can cause a lot of damage to your natural eyelashes. They should also understand and inform you of how to properly care for you eyelash extensions after they have been applied and in-between infills. They should also always inform you if your natural lashes are in bad health and should not apply extensions to damaged eyelashes.
However, there are lash technicians who are training and need to practise on a client. You will find these technicians often offer a low rate which is great if you are happy to be a part of their training. If you decide to go down this route, you should be aware there are higher risks involved than if you went to someone one fully qualified and has be practising for years.
They should always offer a consultation prior to the treatment.
We recommend if you are new to the world of eyelash extensions to take this opportunity to understand more about the procedure and voice any questions or concerns. You can also take this consolation to ask what type of eyelash extensions are best suited to your face and the outcome you want. A good eyelash tech will never offer extensions that are not suitable for your natural lashes, for example, if your lashes are slightly damaged or weak they will advise against anything that will be too heavy for your natural lashes. At your consolation, the lash artist should always run a patch test on as you may be allergic to the lash adhesive and once it is on it is hard to remove.
They should always make you read and sign a consent from prior to your first treatment.
As a client you should always be aware of any potential risks with any cosmetic enhancement or procedure. It is particularly important with eyelash extensions due to the face your eyes are a very sensitive area. The lash technician will either give you a consent from at the time of booking an appointment or on the day of your appointment, this just depends on your lash tech. If you are aware of any allergies you have you must inform them before the procedure.
Look out for Lash Technicians who upload images of their work on a regular basis.
Most eyelash techs will use social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to showcase their work on their clients. It is always great when they post regularly and have a plethora of client photos. This can give you a good idea of how skilled the eyelash technician as well of the styles they offer. We would always recommend checking their tagged images from client’s as this shows they are not just using other artists work and claiming it is their own! Yes, this happens and it is something everyone should be aware of.
Check out the salon.
It is always a good idea to check out a salon prior to having any treatment done. So, what should you look out for? Check how clean the salon looks, check that tools are sterilised and work space is sanitised. You should also check that the technician washes or sanitises their hands prior to the treatment. Usually, you will have a good idea when you step into a salon if it is somewhere you would like to get your treatment or not.
Google them & do your research
This is a great way to find any reviews on them and find out what other people’s experiences were like. If they have a website, you should also give that a look as you may find further information, pictures and prices.
What’s your budget?
Different technicians offer different prices. This is usually based on costs the lash technician incurs such as the area they are located, the costs of hiring a spot in a salon or even the cost of running the salon. It is also based on the costs of the products used as well as how experienced the technician is. You will notice that those with more experience tend to be more expensive than those who are freshly qualified. Lash artists that work from home or are mobile tend to be cheaper than that in a salon due to lower expenses. You should also keep in mind that price of extensions are also determined on the type of lashes you go for, classics are cheaper than hybrids and hybrids are cheaper than Russian volume. This is due to the amount of materials used plus the time it takes to complete a full set or an infill. Once you have your extensions on, you should make sure you head to your salon in good time for an infill as many lash artists have a strict policy on what classes as an infill or a full set.
