Eyelash Extensions: Drying vs Curing
Drying & Curing Eyelash Adhesive
Whether you are new to the world of eyelash extensions or you are a qualified lash technician it is always great to learn new things and better your understanding in order to become the best you can be. Drying and curing, same thing right? Nope, they are different parts of the process and in order to create the perfect set of extensions you need to understand the whole process well, including the adhesive. A lot of people just assume you dip the lash in the glue and apply but there is certainly more to it than just that. That is why we have put together a complete guide plus some extra tips and tricks to help you become a pro in no time!
What is drying?
Drying is the process of the chemical ingredients in the adhesive evaporating into the air which in turn makes the adhesive harden. Ideally you want to use lash glue that is quick drying so you can move onto the next lash faster. If the adhesive isn’t dry before you move onto the next lash you may end up accidently sticking the lash next to it together – not good.
What is curing?
Curing is that step further than drying. Drying is when the outside of the adhesive is hardened by the air. Curing is when the whole of the adhesive through to the centre of the glue hardens. This takes much longer than the drying process (around 24 hours). Because the curing stage takes around a day to harden that is why your clients must avoid getting their extensions wet as well as avoiding hot and humid environments. If your clients does not avoid these factors they are most likely going to cause their extensions to fall out prematurely.
How Humidity Works:
What level of humidity is good for drying lash extensions? You want to keep humidity low at the salon as the adhesive will harden faster. However, your clients aren’t going to sit in your salon for 24 hours waiting for the adhesive to cure so what should I advise them? Once your clients have left the salon, they need to avoid humid environments such as showers and baths for example. However, it is not always as easy as that if you live in a country where humidity is naturally high. If this is the case it is best to keep your car and house cool by using air conditioning or a having a fan nearby.
Why you should avoid humid environment within the 24 hour period after having your lash extensions done? The humid environment will prevent the adhesive from curing as fast and could take up to 48 hours or even longer. You want your extensions to last as long as possible so just keep in a dry, cool environment.
Once you understand how to dry and cure lash adhesive properly, your clients lashes will last longer and they will experience less premature fall out. A happy client is a returning clients so keep this in mind and extend your knowledge of lashing as much as possible.
How to Make the Mos of Eyelash Adhesive & How to Properly Use It:
Shelf Life
Like most other cosmetic products, lash adhesive to have a shelf life. As there are many different glues on the market there is also different shelf lives and should stick by the shelf life that is stated on the bottle. However, lash adhesives usually last around 4 – 6 weeks after being opened. If you are unsure how long your lash adhesive has been opened for, you can check for the following; cloudiness and stringiness. If you find your adhesive looks cloudy or has become stringy, dispose of it and start with a new bottle. There is no point in trying to use the adhesive when it is like this as it will be super hard to work with and the extensions will fall out faster than they would normally.
When you are lashing, you should also change the glue drop you are using every 15 – 20 minutes as the exposure the air and humidity will affect how well the glue works.
Storage
In order to make the most out of your lash glue you will need to ensure you store it correctly. The place you store it in should be a in a cool, dark and dry place so you should avoid leaving it out after you have finishes with it and pop it away.
Always Shake the Adhesive
It is super important to remember to always shake the adhesive up before using it. This is because the ingredients in the glue can separate when the bottle is left to sit. For best results it is recommended that you shake it before using and between appointments if you want to make the most out of your beloved lash adhesive.
How to shake your adhesive properly:
- How long do I need to shake it for? Different glues needs various times to mix all ingredients up properly but on average we recommend you shake for 2 minutes.
- Don’t just shake the bottle gently, it needs to be shaken up very, very well. You will know if you have shaken it well enough if your arm aches a little. If you don’t want to keep shaking it up yourself, you can actually get a little machine that shakes it for you! Yep, there is pretty much an easy solution to everything.
- Don’t shake your lash adhesive with the lid or cap on. No we aren’t that stupid, we don’t mean just shake it so it lands everywhere. Instead of shaking it up with the cap or lid on use any kind of lint free material, tin foil is a popular way but you could also use a makeup sponge if you don’t have any tin foil at hand.
- In order to remove any bubbles that sometimes occur in your adhesive after shaking, pop the nozzle back on and make sure it is the right way up. Gently squeeze the bottle to release any trapped air. This is very important as the bubbles can affect your drop.
